5 Tips for a Smooth Family Photo Session
Let’s be honest—getting the whole family ready for a photo session can feel a little... overwhelming. From choosing outfits to hoping the kids cooperate, it’s a lot! But it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning (and the right photographer 😉), your session can actually be a fun, relaxed experience you’ll all remember fondly.
Here are my top 5 tips to help your next family photo session go smoothly:

Timing matters, especially with little ones. I always recommend sunset sessions, also known as golden hour, because the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. It’s also a quieter time of day—perfect for winding down and capturing natural, relaxed moments.
If sunset is too late for your family, we can find a time that works best for everyone while still keeping lighting in mind.
You don’t have to match exactly—think coordinated, not identical. Neutrals, soft tones, and earth colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces, not your clothes. Avoid big logos or neon colors, and add subtle textures for variety.
Bonus tip: Lay everyone's outfits out together beforehand to see how they look as a group!
A well-fed family is a happy family! Bring a few non-messy snacks and water (especially for young kids). If someone needs a break—take it! I work with the flow of the session and allow time for kids to warm up or reset when needed.
Don’t stress if your child isn’t smiling on cue. Some of the most beautiful photos happen in the in-between moments—when they’re playing, exploring, or snuggling up to you. Trust me, those real emotions shine through more than a forced smile ever could.
I know it’s tempting to micro-manage the session (we’ve all been there!), but try to relax and enjoy this time with your family. You’ve done the prep—now let me take care of the rest. I’ll gently guide you into flattering poses and capture those genuine, love-filled moments you’ll treasure forever.
